- TEMARIL-P (trimeprazine tartrate, prednisolone) TABLETS are approved for:
- Antipruritic
- Indicated for the relief of itching, regardless of cause. The usefulness of TEMARIL-P has been demonstrated for relief of itching and reduction of inflammation associated with most skin disorders of dogs, such as eczema caused by internal disorders, otitis and dermatitis (allergic, parasitic, pustular and non-specific).
- Antitussive
- TEMARIL-P Recommended for primary and adjunctive therapy in various cough conditions of dogs, including “kennel cough” or tracheobronchitis; bronchitis, including all allergic bronchitis and infections; and coughs of non-specific origin (except coughs due to cardiac insufficiencies).
- May be administered to animals suffering from acute or chronic bacterial infections, provided the infection is controlled by appropriate antibiotic or chemotherapeutic agents. As with any pruritus or antitussive treatment, cause of the condition should be determined and eliminated if possible. Otherwise, symptoms are likely to recur after discontinuance of therapy. Often relieves itching that does not respond to other therapy. Corticosteroid-related side effects are dose-related and minimal at recommended dosage.
- 100 and 1,000 tablet bottles.
- Dosage and Administration
- The same dosage schedule may be followed for both antipruritic and antitussive therapy:
- Weight of Dog Initial Dosage

- 11 to 20 lbs 1 tablet, twice daily
- 21 to 40 lbs 2 tablets, twice daily
- over 40 lbs 3 tablets, twice daily
- Precautions
- All precautions applicable to cortisone and phenothiazine derivatives apply to TEMARIL-P. Possible side effects include sodium retention, potassium loss, suppressed adrenal cortical function, vomiting, diarrhea, sedation, blood dyscrasias, delayed wound healing and osteoporosis.
- Cushing’s syndrome in dogs has been reported with prolonged or repeated steroid therapy.
- Possible immunosuppressive effect may occur in patients receiving corticosteroids.
- Premonitory signs of cortisone overdosage (e.g., sodium retention, edema) may not occur with prednisolone, so veterinarians must be alert to detect less obvious side effects, including blood dyscrasias, polydipsia and polyuria.
- If side effects occur, dosage should be reduced and then discontinued unless severity of the condition being treated makes relief paramount.
- Prolonged treatment with TEMARIL-P must be withdrawn gradually.
- Not indicated for use in dogs that are pregnant.
- Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on order of a licensed veterinarian.
