• Clinical Considerations
  The role of dietary management in canine arthritis is to provide a proper balance of total nutrients while meeting the special dietary needs of the patient. Nutritional management of dogs with arthritis centers on reducing excess body weight and providing nutrients with anti-inflammatory characteristics. Long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), nutritionally compete with arachidonic acid as a substrate for cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, reducing the amount of pro-inflammatory mediators produced. Dietary antioxidants can help address the oxidative stress that often accompanies inflammation. Providing a diet containing a natural source of glucosamine may also be beneficial for dogs with arthritis.
