Dog Addison's disease
There are three types of Addison's disease in dogs: primary, secondary and atypical. Primary and atypical Addison's are usually the result of immune damage to the glands by low levels of sodium and potassium in the body. Secondary is hypoadrenocorticism a failure of the pituitary to stimulate the adrenals with adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). Treatment is available for Addisons disease in dogs and based on the form of Addisons your dog may be diagnosed and your veterinarian can prescribe appropriate treatment.
For adrenocortical insufficiency your veterinarian may prescribe Percorten-V an injectable suspension used for the deficiency of mineralocorticoid deficit in dogs. To help regulate and balance the concentration of sodium and potassium in the body a hormone called mineralocorticoid found in Fludrocortisone tablets are also used in the aid of Addisons. And For dogs responsive to an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid therapy treatment Prednisone tablets is an oral corticosteroid for skin conditions found in dogs with Addison’s disease. While your dog with Addison’s disease will need medications and monitoring for the rest of its life, most dogs with Addison’s can return to their favorite activities. Allivet carries the necessary medication to help your dog lead a normal, active and fun-filled life.
