Atropine Ophthalmic Ointment
Atropine Ophthalmic Ointment belongs to the group of medicines called anti-muscarinics. Atropine blocks the receptors in the muscles of the eye. These receptors are involved in controlling the pupil size and the shape of the lens. By blocking these receptors, atropine produces dilatation of the pupil and prevents the eye from accommodating for near vision.

USES: This medication relaxes muscles in the eye causing the pupil to widen (dilate). It is used in conditions where the eye is inflamed. It is also used during eye examinations.
HOW TO USE: To apply ointment, first wash your hands. Be careful not to touch the tube tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface. Pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Place prescribed amount of ointment as directed into this pouch. Gently close your eye for 1 to 2 minutes. Apply gentle pressure to the corner of eye for a few minutes. This will keep the medicine in the eye and minimize your body absorbing the medicine.
Try not to blink and do not rub the eye. Do not rinse the tube. If more than one type of eye medicine is used, wait at least 5 minutes before using the other eye medication. Do not use if ointment has changed color.
