Equine arthritis, otherwise known as degenerative joint disease, is the most common cause of lameness in horses. While older horses are often affected, arthritis can strike at an early age, too, altering a promising career path. Over time, the self-feeding cycle of inflammation results in joint surface (cartilage) deterioration, painful joint capsule thickening and the breakdown of joint fluid. The body, in an attempt to heal the damage, lays down scar tissue and bone that decrease flexibility and overall joint function.  There are several areas of prevention and management that focus on stopping the inflammation and supporting the structures of the joint, including proper trimming/shoeing, exercise, good footing, balanced nutrition, injections and responsible breeding.

The tried-and-true management strategy for arthritis is Bute and Banamine joint injections, which are also used to help alleviate pain and decrease inflammation in horse jointsThe main goal of this therapy is to reduce the inflammation within the joint and help restore it to a more healthy state, therefore reducing pain and returning the horse back to his regular exercise routine. Most joints are injected with a corticosteroid along with hyaluronic acid. Corticosteroids are very strong anti-inflammatory drugs that break the cycle of inflammation. Hyaluronic Adequan is available in an intramuscular preparation that helps strengthen the cartilage and also stimulates the joint to produce more joint fluid. acid is also available in an intravenous . When given intravenously, it migrates to the joint and stimulates the joint to produce more joint fluid and also acts as an anti-inflammatory drug. preparation under the brand name LegendWhen given intravenously, it migrates to the joint and stimulates the joint to produce more joint fluid and also acts as an anti-inflammatory drug. Adequan is available in an intramuscular preparation that helps strengthen the cartilage and also stimulates the joint to produce more joint fluid. Bute and Banamine, are also used to help alleviate pain and decrease inflammation within the joint.

There are also products that can be substituted for Adequan, for example, Chondroprotec or Ichon but they have not been researched nearly as much and may not prove to get the same results.

My vet put my arthritic 10 1/2 year old German Shepherd on Adequan when she rather suddenly became unable to walk or even get up by herself anymore. She was initially diagnosed with arthritis in her hips at age 9 and was put on an oral supplement which finally just wasn't enough. I had to put a towel up under her to get her up and assist her to walk outside just so she could potty. The first Adequan injection made a difference and by the third injection, I could tell a big difference. However, before I could even finish the loading phase it became unavailable from the manufacturer and won't be available again for some months. That's when I found out about Ichon. I finished the loading phase with Ichon and I'm so impressed with Ichon that I plan on staying with it. I've given 4 Ichon injections plus the first 3 that were Adequan to date and her improvement is remarkable. My girl can now get up and walk by herself and she can even use the pet door again. I've even seen her trot just a few steps and she didn't even have to "bunny hop"! My vet told me to continue giving her oral supplements along with the injections. After doing some on-line research, I added Acti-flex 4000 at this time along with continuing the fish oil, Vit. E and her pet vitamins. I believe these all work together synergistically to maximize their effectiveness. I was paying $21.70 per injection of Adequan plus the trip to the Vet to pick it up, but by getting the 5 vial pack of Ichon, it's now six bucks per injection! This is WIN! WIN! and best of all, my girl is walkin' !!!!

This product is every bit as good as Adequan for a lot less money. I have been using it for 2 years now and my horse is doing great.
