For some cats, fleas are a minor inconvenience, but for cats that are allergic to flea saliva, a flea bite can cause severe itching, irritation, and hair loss. And for pet parents, fleas can be more than a nuisance, especially if there are other pets in the home. The importance of year-round flea control with Cheristin for cats cannot be overstated.

Effects of fleas on cats include:

Itch – the most obvious and common effect of fleas is itchiness. This is often the first sign that an infestation is brewing. You may see your cat licking, scratching, and even nibbling at their fur to try to ease the irritation.

Skin and coat issues – the itching caused by flea bites can lead to further problems such as irritated skin and hair loss. If your cat grooms themselves so much that they cut or irritate the skin, it can lead to an infection. Cats may also pull out clumps of hair, leaving bald patches.

Flea allergies – flea allergic dermatitis, or flea allergies, are caused by flea saliva. Most cats develop this allergy by the time they are five years old, but they can develop it at any age. The itching caused by flea allergies is much more severe and often leads to skin rashes, excessive hair loss, and skin infections.

Kittens and fleas – because kittens are so tiny, a blood loss caused by flea bites can leave them anemic and weak, and if not treated, lead to death. Fleas on kittens should not be ignored, but it is essential to consult your veterinarian before giving your kitten a flea treatment since most are not appropriate for kittens less than eight weeks old.

Tapeworm – tapeworms are an intestinal parasite transmitted to cats by fleas that have eaten the eggs of tapeworms. Cats are efficient groomers, and if your cat swallows a flea infected with tapeworm, the eggs will hatch, quickly multiply, and lay eggs in your cat's intestines. This can cause diarrhea and weight loss and rob them of nutrients.

Benefits of Cheristin for Cats

By administering Cheristin for cats topical flea control, you can prevent a flea infestation in your home and the adverse effects it would have on your family and your pets. Cheristin's active ingredient Spinetoram safely and effectively kills fleas in all life stages. It is formulated specifically for cats, so it lasts longer than other options.

Cheristin works fast. It begins killing fleas within 30 minutes of application and kills about 98% to 100% of fleas on your cat within 12 hours. In addition to working fast, it is long-lasting, offering protection for up to six weeks. It contains an ingredient specifically designed for cats and comes in a one-size-fits-all dosage for cats and kittens more than eight weeks of age and weighing more than 1.8 lbs. This makes it a great option for homes with multiple cats because you don't have to worry about different dosages for different cats. Cheristin is available without a prescription.

How Does Cheristin for Cats Work?

Spinetoram is one of the newest spinosyn-class natural products used for flea control. The spinosyns are an unusual family of fermentation-derived insecticides that work effectively with lower environmental effects. This family of insecticides affects the nervous system of insects such as fleas that come into contact with it or ingest it. It causes hyperexcitation of the insect nervous system or uncontrollable flexing of their muscles, which then leads to paralysis and death.

Always monitor your cat after applying or administering any type of flea control. Although generally safe and effective when used according to the instructions included in the packaging, Cheristin may cause hair loss, greasy clumping hair, or inflammation, redness, and itching at the application site. Additional possible side effects include:

Lethargy

Vomiting

Loss of appetite

If these or any other unusual behaviors or side effects occur, speak with your veterinarian and follow their instructions. Like all topicals, apply at the base of the head so that your cat cannot lick it off. Avoid petting the area and if you get any of the product on your skin, wash your hands immediately. Do not allow your cat to lick or eat Cheristin and avoid getting it in their eyes or mouth. Cheristin may interact with other medications, be sure to consult with your veterinarian about any medication your cat is taking before administering.

How to Prevent a Flea Infestation

Once you have fleas in your home, it can be very difficult to get rid of them. That's why many veterinarians recommend treating your cat for fleas year-round, especially if you live in areas where the weather is hospitable to fleas. Monthly flea control will keep your cat flea-free, this is the first step in preventing a flea infestation in your home.

If you find fleas on your cat or in your home, immediately wash all of their bedding. This is a likely hiding place for eggs and larvae as well as adult fleas. It's a good idea to wash their bedding at least once a month, and in the case of a severe infestation, get rid of their old bedding and replace it with new.

Thoroughly vacuum the carpets and throw the vacuum cleaner bags away – outside – as they may contain flea eggs that could hatch and remain in your home. Pay close attention to the areas where your cat sleeps. If the infestation is severe, consider steam-cleaning the carpets.

If your cat goes outside, or you have other pets that go in and out, make sure your lawn is well maintained. Try to keep your pets away from overgrown bushes or shrubs. Consider keeping your cats inside as much as possible to avoid them being exposed to fleas.
