In veterinary medicine, vaccines are considered the cornerstone of preventive care. They are the number one defense against many debilitating and sometimes fatal diseases in cats, dogs, and other pets. Keeping your pet's vaccines up to date is key to protecting their health.

Just like us, vaccines can protect pets from some diseases. Vaccines trigger an immune response that helps your pet fight off diseases and protects them from future infections. They can either lessen the severity of infection or prevent it from occurring. Pets should be vaccinated regularly to protect them from contracting and spreading diseases.

Risk Factors of Vaccines

There's no doubt that vaccines protect our pets against life-threatening illnesses. As with any medical intervention, there are some risks associated with vaccines. They can cause adverse effects in some dogs and cats, but these instances are very rare and generally short-lived. Keep in mind that for most pets, the benefits of vaccinations far outweigh any potential risks.

Vaccine reactions include:

Common or mild reactions – a soft lump formed at the injection site that usually resolved on its own in a few weeks. Slight fever, decreased appetite, and lethargy for a few days after vaccination. If they do not subside in a few days, contact your veterinarian.

Rare reactions – allergic reactions, some mild such as hives, redness, swelling, and itchiness. Severe reactions include weakness, breathing difficulty, vomiting, diarrhea, pale gums, and collapse. See your veterinarian or an emergency veterinarian immediately.

To Vaccinate or Not to Vaccinate

There are many factors that can influence the vaccines you give your pet. Do they spend a lot of time outdoors? Is your cat an indoor/outdoor cat? Are they likely to slip out without you realizing it? Do you regularly take your dog to the dog park or compete in events such as agility? Discuss all of these factors when with your vet to determine your pets' core and non-core vaccination schedule, even if you vaccinate your pets yourself.

The factors influencing a pet's risks and vaccination schedule:

  • Their age – some vaccines are contraindicated for puppies and kittens or senior pets
  • Their health status – vaccinations are only recommended for healthy pets
  • Do they regularly mix with other cats or dogs
  • Common diseases where they live
  • Common diseases in places they visit often or on vacation
  • Their lifestyle and activities (dog park, daycare, boarding)

Core Versus Non-Core Vaccinations

Some vaccines are considered so important they are required by law, such as the rabies vaccine. These are known as core vaccines. Others are optional and are known as non-core vaccines. This distinction is to avoid giving unnecessary vaccinations by basing the vaccines given on the needs of the individual pet.

The decision to vaccinate dogs and cats with a non-core vaccine involves a careful assessment of their lifestyle, health status, age, exposure to other pets and the health of those pets, vaccine history, and, in some cases, any medications the pets are taking. Since all treatments have some risks, including vaccines, these risks must be weighed against the potential benefit based on each pet's situation.

Below are lists of core and non-core vaccines for dogs and cats.

Core Vaccines for Dogs

  • Canine distemper virus
  • Rabies
  • Canine parvovirus
  • Canine adenovirus

Non-core Vaccines for Dogs

  • Leptospirosis — Some veterinarians consider this a core vaccine.

  • Bordetella bronchiseptica (kennel cough)
  • Canine influenza virus
  • Lyme disease

Core Vaccines for Cats

  • Panleukopenia (feline distemper)
  • Feline herpesvirus (viral rhinotracheitis)
  • Calicivirus
  • Rabies virus

Non-Core Vaccines for Cats

  • Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV)
  • Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)
