What is Rabies?

Rabies is one of the most dangerous and fatal viruses dogs can be infected with. The rabies virus can also affect humans and other animals.

How do dogs get rabies?

Rabies is transmitted when a rabid (rabies infected) animal bites another animal or a person. The most common infection sources in North America are bats, coyotes, raccoons, foxes, and skunks. Once bitten, the rabies virus begins to make its way through the dog’s body. It enters the dog’s peripheral nerves, where it reproduces and begins to spread. It enters the salivary glands, then sheds through the dog’s saliva.

What symptoms are associated with rabies, and how does it affect an infected dog?

After a bite, signs of a rabies infection may take anywhere from 10 days to four months to present. Rabies is unique in that it progresses in a series of stages. Those stages are:

  • Prodromal – Dogs experience a noticeable temperament change. A calm dog might become more aggressive or angry, and an energetic dog can suddenly seem withdrawn. This stage is typically 2 to 3 days long. After the prodromal stage, rabies takes one of the following two forms.
  • Furious Rabies – The infected dog will become aggressive. They will show signs of insatiable appetite, pica (chewing or eating inedible objects like dirt or rocks), and excitability. The dog will slowly become paralyzed, and the dog will lose its ability to drink or eat. The dog will then die following a severe seizure.
  • Dumb Rabies – This is the most likely form of rabies your dog can experience. Paralysis sets in slowly, affecting the limbs, distorting the face, and affecting the dog’s ability to swallow properly. The dog gradually becomes comatose before it sadly succumbs to the infection and dies.

Because there is no treatment for rabies, infected dogs must be isolated to prevent them from injuring people or other animals. If a dog is found to have rabies, they must be euthanized. Letting the virus run its course would also lead to death, but could mean that other pets or people are bitten and infected as well. The virus causes agonizing symptoms, so euthanizing is viewed as the humane option for rabid dogs.

While no vaccination can be considered 100% effective, vaccinated dogs typically cannot get rabies. However, any dog bitten by a rabid animal should be quarantined to ensure that they have not been infected with rabies. While cost is always a concern for rabies or any other vaccine for dogs, veterinarians insist that a rabies shot is a top priority for all dogs. The rabies vaccine cost for dogs is well worth the priceless benefit of protecting your dog from this fatal virus!
