What are the side effects of Etogesic 300mg?

NSAIDs are often considered to produce unacceptable, sometimes life-threatening adverse reactions. These can include:
  • Stomach ulcers, stomach rupture, and/or stomach perforation
  • Deactivation of platelets (and subsequent clotting issues)
  • Lower supply of blood to the kidneys, and potential kidney failure
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea

What special precautions are there?

  • Dogs being treated with Etogesic (and any other NSAID) should receive periodic evaluation to be sure the medication is still needed and that the animal tolerates it well.
  • Etogesic can worsen clinical signs in dogs with occult or pre-existing cardiovascular, hepatic, or gastrointestinal issues, bleeding disorders, or blood dyscrasias.
  • Cyclooxygenase inhibitory NSAID drugs like Etogesic can cause renal or gastrointestinal toxicity. Each patient's sensitivity will vary. Patients at the greatest risk of renal toxicity are those on diuretics, those who are dehydrated, and those with hepatic, cardiovascular, and/or renal dysfunction. Because NSAIDs can cause gastrointestinal ulcers, other NSAIDs should not be used in conjunction with Etogesic (unless carefully monitored and prescribed by a veterinarian).
  • Studies have not been performed to test the effects of EtoGesic in conjunction with other protein-bound medications. Compatibility must be closely monitored in dogs requiring these medications.
  • Safety has not been demonstrated in dogs under 1 year old or in those who are lactating, pregnant, or breeding.
  • Keep away from children.
  • Not for use in humans.
  • Seek medical attention if ingested by a human.
  • Only for use in dogs. Not safe for cats.
  • Dogs should receive a complete history and physical exam before starting on any NSAID medication. Hematological and serum biochemical baseline data should be collected through lab testing before and during NSAID administration. Pet parents should be aware of the signs of drug toxicity.
