What are the side effects of Epogen?

The most commonly reported side effect of Epogen is antibody production. Antibodies are produced as a response to foreign proteins in the body. The issue is that antibodies are produced against the foreign (human) erythropoietin and also against the animal's natural erythropoietin. This causes profound anemia, which must be treated with a blood transfusion. Routine monitoring for a drop in red blood cell counts is crucial. This is the first sign that an issue is developing, and this medication may be discontinued before the problem advances.

What special precautions are there?

  • This medication should not be administered to animals with known allergy or hypersensitivity to it.
  • Do not administer to animals with uncontrolled high blood pressure.
  • This drug could interact with other medications. Speak with your veterinarian to decide if other medications your pet is taking may interact with Epogen.
  • With continued use, this medication could become ineffective. In some animals, the immune system could interact against Epogen, causing the body to become resistant to the benefits of the medication. Because of this, it should be used with caution and typically only as a last resort.

What to do if overdose?

Contact your closest animal hospital.

How can I store Epogen?

Helpful Tips:

The treatment duration depends on the severity of the treated condition, the pet's response to the drug, and any developed side effects. Complete the entire course of treatment unless otherwise instructed by your veterinarian.
