Trifexis is a once-monthly treatment that works to kill fleas, prevent heartworm disease and flea infestations, and control adult whipworm, roundworm, and hookworm infections. It comes in the form of a tasty tablet that dogs love!

Why is Trifexis prescription only?

Trifexis, like many other heartworm and flea treatments, requires a prescription because your dog should always be tested for heartworms before starting on a preventative medication. Existing infestations must be ruled out for your dog’s safety, and appropriate treatment should be pursued if an infestation is found before starting on this medication.

How much is Trifexis at the vet?

For current prescription pricing at your veterinary clinic, contact your veterinarian and inquire about the product you wish to purchase. Prices will vary from clinic to clinic. For the lowest price on your dog’s Trifexis prescription, order it from Allivet!

What is the generic for Trifexis?

Trifexis combines milbemycin oxime and spinosad. Interceptor is a product containing only milbemycin oxime, and Comfortis contains spinosad. However, neither product contains both active ingredients. One product, called ComboGuard, contains the same two active ingredients.

When does Trifexis expire?

Trifexis was first approved by the FDA in 2011 with a 24-month shelf life. However, further post-approval tests have shown that the product is more stable than previously believed. The expiration date of Trifexis is now 36 months after the date of manufacture.

How quickly does Trifexis work?

Administering Trifexis to your dog once a month will provide continued protection against intestinal parasites, heartworm disease, and fleas. It comes complete with stick-on calendar labels to remind you about your dog’s monthly dose.

How often do you give Trifexis to your dog?

Administering Trifexis to your dog once a month will provide continued protection against intestinal parasites, heartworm disease, and fleas. It comes complete with stick-on calendar labels to remind you about your dog’s monthly dose.

Why is Trifexis not working?

If you continue to notice fleas on your dog after Trifexis treatment, there is likely a new infestation. Other pets in the home should be treated, as should the dog’s indoor and outdoor environments. Continue administering Trifexis and speak to your veterinarian to determine a comprehensive flea protection plan.

Does Trifexis make dogs sick?

Some of the most frequently-reported side effects of Trifexis include vomiting, itching, diarrhea, decreased appetite, skin inflammation, decreased activity, ear redness, skin redness, hypersalivation, seizures, and/or shaking or trembling. However, adverse reactions are atypical, and Trifexis is generally considered safe for use in dogs.

Why is Trifexis bad for your dog?

For years, rumors and theories have circulated the internet about the lack of safety of flea and tick treatments. However, Trifexis is an FDA-approved medication with a wide margin of safety. These anecdotes are unsubstantiated and should not be relied upon as a source of medical information

Is it ok to crush Trifexis?

Trifexis may be crushed and combined with your dog’s food. However, it is crucial to ensure that your dog consumes their entire meal (and therefore, their entire dose of Trifexis).

Do dogs have to chew Trifexis?

Dogs should be monitored while chewing their monthly dose of Trifexis. Gulping any item can be harmful or fatal to a dog. If you anticipate a compliance issue with your dog, Trifexis may be crushed and combined with food.

Do fleas have to bite for Trifexis to work?

No, your dog will be protected by Trefexis whether fleas bite them or not. Any flea that comes into contact with your dog will be killed by the medication. Your dog will be protected against fleas, their bites, and resulting flea bite dermatitis.

Can you bathe a dog after Trifexis?

Yes! Because Trifexis is a chewable medication and not a topical treatment, even frequent bathing or swimming will have no effect on the level of protection your dog receives.

Can dogs still get fleas on Trifexis?

If your dog’s indoor and outdoor environment are not properly treated for fleas, they may still be exposed to them. While Trifexis kills any fleas that make contact with your dog, it is not a treatment for your pet’s bedding, crate, or other favorite areas.

Can Trifexis cause itching?

Yes, itching is a potential side effect of Trifexis. Itching, redness, and skin inflammation can occur, but are typically mild. These non-severe reactions tend to resolve themselves naturally with no need for medical intervention.

Can I give Trifexis without food?

For maximum effectiveness, Trifexis should be administered with food. However, it is a tasty, beef-flavored, chewable tablet, so your dog is likely to readily accept it. This makes monthly dosing convenient and easy for dogs and their parents.
