Flunixin Meglumine may be injected intramuscularly or intravenously for as many as 5 days to alleviate visceral pain caused by colic.

Flunixin meglumine is an analgesic, nonsteroidal, non-narcotic, and powerful agent that boasts antipyretic and anti-inflammatory benefits. It is far more powerful than codeine, meperidine, and pentazocine as an analgesic.

What are the side effects of Flunixin Meglumine Injectable?

In case of allergic reaction, seek emergency veterinary attention. These signs are:
  • Coma
  • Cold limbs
  • Pale gums
  • Seizures
  • Shock
  • Sudden diarrhea onset
  • Scratching
  • Hives
  • Swelling of the face
If you have administered intramuscularly and an infection occurs at the injection site, the condition can become fatal. Notify your veterinarian if your horse experiences:
  • Fever
  • Swelling
  • Pain
If you observe any of the following side effects, withdraw use and consult your veterinarian:
  • Bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Changes in the smell or color of urine, increased urination, or increased thirst (signs of kidney effects)
  • Constipation; bloody, tarry, or dark stools; diarrhea; or appetite loss, which can be signs of a stomach ulcer

The recommended dose for musculoskeletal disorders is 0.5 mg per pound (1 mL/100 lbs) of body weight once daily. The recommended dose for the alleviation of pain associated with equine colic is 0.5 mg per pound of body weight. Intravenous administration is recommended for prompt relief.
