What is Sentinel Spectrum?

Sentinel Spectrum sterilizes adult fleas and protects your dogs and puppies against parasites such as heartworm, hookworms, tape worms and removes and controls adult roundworm and whip worm infections in dogs and puppies. Sentinel Spectrum Tasty Chews are beef-flavored, and studies have shown they are so palatable that 97% of dogs accept them straight from the hand.

Who is Sentinel Spectrum for?

For use in dogs and puppies over four weeks in age and two pounds in weight.

Why use Sentinel Spectrum?

Features of Sentinel Spectrum:
  • Controls and prevents infestation of fleas
  • Prevents against heartworm disease
  • Controls and treats hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms
  • Controls and treats tapeworm (unlike Sentinel Flavor Tabs)

How does Sentinel Spectrum work?

One active ingredient of Sentinel Spectrum, milbemycin oxime:
  • Is a macrocyclic anthelmintic, thought to work by impeding invertebrate neurotransmission
  • Kills heartworm larvae in the tissue stage
  • Eliminates hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum) in the adult stage
  • Eradicates whipworm (Trichuris vulpis), roundworm (Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina), and hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum) infestations, as long as the medication is orally administered following the recommended dosage schedule.

Lufenuron manages fleas by preventing egg development, but it does not kill fleas in the adult stage. For this reason, it may be prudent to administer an adulticide concurrently.

Manufacturer:

Virbac

Milbemycin oxime, Lufenuron & Praziquantel

How is Sentinel Spectrum sold?

  • Green: 8.1-25 lbs
  • Yellow: 25.1-50 lbs

  • Skin congestion
  • Anorexia
  • Diarrhea

What special precautions are there?

  • Safe use in puppies under 11 weeks old or in nursing or pregnant dogs has not been proven.
  • A short-term shock-like reaction may occur if an adult heartworm-infected animal (therefore experiencing circulating microfilariae) is dosed with Sentinel Spectrum. To prevent this from occurring, an adult heartworm test should be performed before starting this medication. If the dog is found to have adult heartworms, they should be appropriately treated before starting on Sentinel Spectrum.

Overview

Please read the insert contained in each package for complete information on the individual products prior to dispensing or dosing. The effects of SENTINEL SPECTRUM on heartworm disease and internal parasites are not described in this supplement.

Step 1: Control

Give SENTINEL SPECTRUM once per month to prevent and control flea populations. SENTINEL SPECTRUM contains lufenuron. Lufenuron controls flea populations by preventing the development of flea eggs and does not kill adult fleas. If a dog currently has a flea infestation, more rapid relief can be accomplished by adding CAPSTAR to the treatment as follows.

Step 2: Kill Adult Fleas

If your pet currently has a flea infestation, use CAPSTAR Tablets to kill adult fleas. CAPSTAR Tablets contain nitenpyram and are effective for the treatment of flea infestations. Nitenpyram starts killing adult fleas within 30 minutes of administration.

- Administer CAPSTAR Tablets once per week until adult fleas are no longer observed.

- For a severe flea infestation, administer CAPSTAR Tablets twice per week until adult fleas are no longer observed.

- Additional CAPSTAR Tablets may be administered as needed to kill the occasional adult flea picked up from infested environments.

- It is important to treat all cats and dogs in the household. All cats should be treated with approved products like lufenuron in combination with nitenpyram as needed. Fleas can reproduce on untreated pets and allow infestations to persist.

Dosage

The combination of SENTINEL SPECTRUM and CAPSTAR Tablets should be administered according to the following schedule. Weigh your dog prior to administration to ensure proper dosage. Do not administer to dogs under 2 pounds.

97% of dogs will take the tasty chews straight from the hand. Otherwise, the dose can be added to a small meal or placed directly in the mouth, similar to tablet dosing.
