In order to identify the source of a food allergy in dogs, you must feed a good source of protein the dog has never had before. Then, you must reintroduce all the old foods and eliminate the sources that do not cause food allergy symptoms. Food allergy symptoms in dogs consists of ear inflammation, gastrointestinal problems, and chronic diarrhea to chronic gas, licking their feet, or an itchy rear end. To confirm adverse food reaction or food allergy, offer the original diet for 3-7 days after clinical signs have improved. The duration of an elimination diet trial is 6-8 weeks and ideally up to 12 weeks to see improvement or resolution. Do not offer treats, snacks, human foods, flavored medications or foods to hide medications, flavored toothpaste, or nutritional supplements during the elimination diet trial.
