What are the side effects of Carprovet (Carprofen) Flavored Tablets?

NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like Carprofen can carry a risk for adverse reactions, such as:
  • Diarrhea or dark, tarry stools
  • Vomiting
  • Decrease of appetite
  • Increase of urination
  • Increase of water consumption
  • Anemia (indicated by pale gums)
  • Jaundice (indicated by skin, gum, or eye yellowing)
  • Incoordination
  • Lethargy
  • Changes in behavior
  • Seizures

What special precautions are there?

  • Dogs who have previously shown sensitivity to Carprofen should not be given this medication again.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Do not give to cats.
  • Do use in nursing or pregnant animals.
  • Periodic kidney and liver function tests must be done.

Overview

Use as directed by your Veterinarian

Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration consistent with individual response. The recommended dosage for oral administration to dogs is 2 mg/lb (4.4 mg/kg) of body weight daily. The total daily dose may be administered as 2 mg/lb of body weight once daily or divided and administered as 1 mg/lb (2.2 mg/kg) twice daily. For the control of postoperative pain, administer approximately 2 hours before the procedure.
