Estrumate (Cloprostenol Sodium) Description
Estrumate (Cloprostenol Sodium) is an intramuscular injectable solution that works to induce luteolysis. With luteolytic action, this medication is useful in manipulating the cow's estrous cycle, allowing for compliance to your management practice, treatment of specific prolonged luteal function-related conditions, and termination of pregnancy when mismating has occurred.
Which animals/pets is Estrumate (Cloprostenol Sodium) for?
For use in dairy cattle and beef cattle.
Estrumate (Cloprostenol Sodium) uses
Estrumate is used to treat specific conditions caused by prolonged luteal function and to control the estrous cycle of dairy and beef cattle.
What does Estrumate (Cloprostenol Sodium) do?
Cloprostenol sodium causes morphological and functional corpus luteum regression. For non-pregnant, normal cycling animals, this action on the corpus luteum typically causes estrus within 2 to 5 days of treatment. For animals with luteal cysts, mummified fetus, or pyometra (prolonged luteal function), induction of luteolysis typically resolves the condition and returns cyclicity. Pregnant animals, depending upon the gestation stage, could abort.
Estrumate (Cloprostenol Sodium) side effects
  • At both 50 and 100 times recommended doses, minor reactions may occur in certain cattle, including milk letdown, minor frothing, and an increase in uneasiness.
  • Do not administer to pregnant animals. Abortion can occur.

What to know before using Estrumate (Cloprostenol Sodium)
  • Like any parenteral product, strict aseptic technique should be used in an effort to prevent post-injection bacterial infections. If any sign of infection is noted, antibiotic treatment should be initiated at the first indication.
  • When breeding occurs with induced estrus or at a period of 72 and 96 hours after treatment, no effect has been noted on fertility using a single or double dose.
  • Rates of conception can be lower than anticipated in a fixed time breeding program omitting second inseminations (inseminating at or around the 96 hour mark). This is particularly true in cases where fixed time insemination is employed after a single injection of Estrumate.
  • Estrumate has been shown to readily absorb into the skin, which can lead to bronchospasm and/or abortion. Therefore, avoid direct skin contact. Accidental skin spillage should be immediately washed off using soap and water.
  • Use extreme caution when handling if you have respiratory issues or bronchial problems (including asthma) or if you are a woman of childbearing age. Women can be unaware of pregnancy in earlier stages.
  • Only for veterinary use.
