What are the differences between Sentinel and Nexgard

There are some notable differences between these products. Mainly Sentinel is used for parasites such as Roundworms, Hookworms, Whipworms and prevents heartworm. In regards to fleas, it breaks the cycle of the fleas reproduction cycle but does not eliminate an active flea infestation. Both products are given orally as tasty treats with a beef flavor. Both products are a once a month maintenance cycle for your pets health. Sentinel can be started as early as 4 weeks of age while Nexgard can be safely administered at 8 weeks of age and heavier than 4lbs.

Sentinel uses a combination of two drugs, an anti-parasitic called Milbemycin oxime which eliminates worms in your pet while Lufenuron works by preventing the development of eggs and larvae, preventing them from maturing and continuing the infestation of an animal. Nexgard uses Afoxoflaner and kills 100% of fleas and ticks in 24 hours. Nexgard is the only FDA approved option for preventing infections that cause Lyme disease. However, unlike Sentinel, Nexgard has not yet been evaluated for use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs.

Sentinel and Nexgard require a prescription from your veterinarian before they can be purchased. Your vet should be able to answer any questions related to side effects, precautions, or special care for your dog.

Final Thoughts on Sentinel vs Nexgard

Both products are fairly diverse and target different aspects of your pets overall health. While Sentinel is mainly used to prevent infestation, not an active one. Nexgard however treats active infestations of fleas and ticks. Some pet owners may start on Nexgard to help with active infestations then switch to Sentinel as maintenance. The cost between Nexgard and Sentinel is quite different, simply because of what these products target. Pet owners over the course of a year would spend twice as much on Nexgard as they would for Sentinel. Additionally, some pet owners may opt to switch to Sentinel to protect breeding, pregnant, and lactating dogs.
