Trifexis vs Revolution

Looking for the best medications for your pet can be tough. At Allivet, we want to make this experience an easy one! There are two popular parasite treatments available that we'll compare to help you make the best choice for your sweet pup. Trifexis Chewable Tablets and Revolution will both protect your loved ones, but they take different approaches to parasite control. Use the table and additional information below to decide which option is best for your specific pet.

What are the differences between Trifexis and Revolution

A notable difference between the two medications is that Trifexis is a chewable tablet given to your pet, while Revolution is a topical treatment. Both medications are given once a month. Trifexis is effective against heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, and fleas. The primary purpose of Revolution is to eliminate fleas, American dog ticks, ear mites, roundworms, and hookworms. Dogs must be 6 weeks or older before using Revolution and 8 weeks for Trifexis. It should also be noted that your pup must be at least 5 pounds to use Trifexis.

Trifexis contains Spinosad and Milbemycin Oxime, and it begins to kill fleas in as little as 30 minutes. It eliminates all fleas within 4 hours. Revolution features Selamectin, which kills adult fleas and prevents flea eggs from hatching. It is effective for one month and is indicated for the prevention and control of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis), prevention of heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis, and the treatment and control of ear mite (Otodectes cynotis) infestations. Revolution is also indicated for the treatment and control of sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei) and for the control of tick infestations due to Dermacentor variabilis.

Both products are safe for dogs when used as directed. However, unlike Revolution, Trifexis has not yet been evaluated for use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs. Revolution is safe for use in these dogs. Trifexis is not available for cats. However, Revolution is a topical treatment and comes with a feline option.

Trifexis and Revolution require a veterinarian prescription. Your vet should be able to answer any questions related to side effects, precautions, or special care for your dog.

Final Thoughts on Trifexis vs Revolution

The costs associated with these two products are very comparable. For its added protections, pet owners may feel that Revolution is the best choice. Revolution also offers a separate formula made just for cats if you have a multi-pet home. However, due to the fast action of Trifexis, some pet owners may feel quick relief is essential for their pet. Additionally, some pet parents and their vets may switch to Revolution to protect breeding, pregnant, and lactating dogs.
