Heartgard Plus For Dogs
HEARTGARD Plus prevents canine heartworm disease, and also treats parasites such as roundworms and hookworms in dogs.
Who is it for?
Dogs and puppies over 6 weeks of age. Safe for pregnant/breeding females.
Why use it?
A single bite from an infected mosquito can introduce new heartworm larvae into your dog's bloodstream and reinfect an unprotected dog. Use HEARTGARD Plus every month as directed to kill immature heartworms introduced to the dog in the last 30 days, preventing the development of adult heartworms. It is also used for the treatment and control of hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, A. brasiliense, and Uncinaria stenocephala) and roundworms (ascarids - Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina).

How it works?
Heartgard Plus contains two active ingredients: ivermectin, which interferes with the parasite's nerve transmission, causing paralysis and death of the immature heartworms (larvae), and pyrantel pamoate, which also interferes with the parasite's nerve transmission, causing paralysis and death of intestinal worms.

What are the side effects?
HEARTGARD is well tolerated. In rare cases vomiting or diarrhea within 24 hours of dosing was observed (1.1% of administered doses).
The following adverse reactions have been reported following the use of HEARTGARD:
Depression/lethargy, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, mydriasis, ataxia, staggering,
convulsions and hypersalivation.
What special precautions are there?
All dogs should be tested for heartworm infection before starting a preventive program.
Do not give Heartgard Plus to your pet if already taking another heartworm medication.
What to do if overdose?
Contact your nearest emergency animal clinic.
How Can I store it?
Store between 68°F - 77°F (20°C - 25°C).
Excursions between 59°F - 86°F (15°C - 30°C) are permitted. Protect product from light.
Helpful Tips:
It is important to eliminate fleas on the pet and in the household and to not feed the pet rodents or uncooked meat or fish. To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended.
HEARTGARD Plus should be administered orally at monthly intervals at the recommended minimum dose level of 6 mcg of ivermectin per kilogram (2.72 mcg/lb) and 5 mg of pyrantel (as pamoate salt) per kg (2.27 mg/lb) of body weight. The recommended dosing schedule for prevention of canine heartworm disease and for the treatment and control of ascarids and hookworms.

WARNING!!!! DO NOT BUY HEARTGARD FOR YOUR PET!!! The company does not provide any warranty of its product unless it is purchased directly through the vet! I gave my 10 month old puppy Heartgard Plus for 9 months and he just tested positive for heartworm. It is very expensive to treat and puts the pet through a lot of discomfort and pain. I talked to three different vets and they all told me that the only way such a young dog who was on heartworm prevention could get heartworm was by the medicine being defective. Heartguard Plus will not take responsibility for its faulty, ineffective product because it was not purchased through a vet. NEVER EVER BUY HEARTGARD. Your dog may be at risk too!

Heartgard holds a full warranty provided that you purchase via veterinarian. Meaning that you follow that standards based on the national heartworm prevention society. Sadly people purchase online for the cheaper cost so Merial (makers of Heartgard) cannot guarantee that the products are being stored properly, diverted, etc. Thus voiding the product guarantee. It is a bit more expensive via the vet but better to purchase through them and know that Merial will cover ALL costs of treatment if a positive test shows. The National Heartworm Society takes that VERY seriously.
