What is compounding?
Compounding is the process of preparing medications in specific strengths or forms that might not be commercially available. It provides flexibility when an animal needs a medication in a different form, such as a liquid instead of a tablet, or a specific strength that’s easier to give or better suited to an animal’s needs.
Why would my pet need a compounded medication?
Sometimes, a commercially available medication isn't available in the strength, dosage form, or flavor that works best for your pet. In these cases, your veterinarian may prescribe a compounded version to make administration easier or more practical. For instance, some medications may be prepared in different strengths or forms, such as turning a tablet into a liquid, to make administration easier.
Are compounded medications safe for my pet?
Compounded medications are prepared under strict quality and safety standards to help ensure consistency and reliability. When prescribed by your veterinarian, they can offer options when a medication needs to be provided in a different strength, form, or flavor. As with any medication, always follow your veterinarian’s directions.
Do I need a prescription for a compounded pet medication?
Yes. Compounded medications can only be dispensed with a valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian. This requirement helps ensure your pet receives the correct medication, dosage, and strength for safe and appropriate treatment.
Who compounds the medications ordered through Allivet?
