    What is Nexgard for Dogs and Puppies?

    NexGard Chewables are the only FDA approved chewable that kills fleas and ticks on dogs. They also help prevent and control flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis), and American Dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) infestations for one month. NexGard is sold with the package inserts and instructions, but does not include the box.

    How does Nexgard for Dogs and Puppies work?

    NexGard is given orally once a month, at the minimum dosage of 1.14 mg/lb (2.5 mg/kg).

    The main ingredient in NexGard, afoxolaner inhibits insect and acarine ligand-gated chloride channels, in particular those gated by the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), blocking pre-post synaptic transfer of chloride ions across cell membranes.

    How is Nexgard for Dogs and Puppies sold?

    NEXGARD is sold with the package inserts and instructions but does not include the box.

    These chewable tablets are beef-flavored and available in four sizes : 11.3, 28.3, 68 or 136 mg afoxolaner. Each chewable size is available in color-coded packages of 3 or 6 beef-flavored chewables.

    What are the side effects of Nexgard for Dogs and Puppies?

    The most frequently reported adverse reactions include vomiting, dry or flaky skin, diarrhea, lethargy and anorexia.

    What special precautions are there?

    NexGard Chewables have not been evaluated for safety in pregnant, breeding or lactating dogs, and veterinarians are advised to use them with caution in dogs with a history of seizures.

    What to do if overdose?

    If you give your dog too much NexGard, contact your nearest emergency animal hospital.

    How can I store Nexgard for Dogs and Puppies?

    Store at or below 30°C (86°F) with excursions permitted up to 40°C (104°F).

    Helpful Tips:

    You may begin your dog’s NexGard treatment at any time of the year. In areas where fleas are common year-round, monthly treatment with NexGard should continue the entire year without interruption. To minimize the likelihood of flea reinfestation, it is important to treat all animals within a household with an approved flea control product.

    Pharmacists are standing by to offer Pet Parent counseling regarding prescription medication purchased from Allivet before and after dispensing. Pharmacists on duty are available Monday-Friday, 9:30AM - 5:30PM EST and will be on call Saturday 12:00PM - 4:00PM EST for consultation.
    You should give your dog or puppy a NexGard Chewable orally once a month, at the minimum dosage of 1.14 mg/lb (2.5 mg/kg).
     
    NexGard can be administered with or without food. Make sure that your dog consumes the complete dose. Observe your dog for a few minutes to ensure that part of the dose is not lost or refused. If it is suspected that any of the dose has been lost or if vomiting occurs within two hours of administration, you may give your dog another full dose. 
     
    If a dose is missed, administer NexGard and resume a monthly dosing schedule.
    NexGard (afoxolaner) is manufactured by Merial and contains the active ingredient afoxolaner. These chewables are available in four sizes of beef-flavored, soft chews that should be orally administered according to your pet’s weight. Each chewable is formulated to provide a minimum afoxolaner dosage of 1.14 mg/lb (2.5 mg/kg).
