Cyproheptadine HCI will generally start working in a matter of hours as a treatment for serotonin syndrome, antihistamine, and appetite stimulant. Several days of treatment could be required in order to achieve the full effect. When treating horses, it could take weeks to months to see an effect.

Periodically, a cat may have a "paradoxical" reaction, which causes excitement.
Like other antihistamines, anticholinergic effects occur at overdose or higher doses. These effects include:
