Milk of Magnesia is an excellent product. I have known about it and its benefits for over a decade. Does a great job of subduing heart burn and indigestion.
The fact that this size is available on Allivet makes me a very happy camper. It ensures that as much as I use it for my horses, I will be able to source it in this size and purchase enough so that I wont ever run out. I know the signs of colic and as soon as I see the signs I grab my Milk of Magnesia and magic happens.
Usually, when there is a change in the feed, my gelding experiences a few minor colics. I'm guessing he has a sensitive stomach. I called my vet today to ask if MOM would be something I could give to him along with the Banimine if he was presenting with colic symptoms, to sooth his stomach. the vet said it was fine and told me the suggested dose - 4oz. I have just ordered it, to have when I need it.
I am NEVER out of MoM. I use a 100 cc syringe( sans needle, of course) and just squirt it in my geldings mouth. First,I pour the MOM into a shallow container which makes it easier to suck up into the syringe. I try to get as much into the horse as possible, not without some spilling so don't stress too much about being exact.
My horse seemed a bit off and wasn't interested ini eating her feed. I don't take colic lightly, and the first thing i try is MoM. I always follow directions but with an animal over 1000 pounds i definitely give my horse a bit more than what's suggested.
At the onset of colic we always use MoM. Normally there it subsides within an hour. If that doesn't happen, we call the vet. The vet however hasn't been called very often since we've discovered that the MoM works. Mixed with baking soda in a paste, it ends up being about 180 cc's.
My horse has been on the verge of colic for about 2 weeks now. I tried various things to rid him of this but nothing moving the sand. He looked uncomfortable and in pain on one side with no gut sound there. I also gave him banamine but that offered short term relief. After about 2 days it would be back to square one. After administering a poop test, it was revealed there was no more sand so the vet thought it must be an ulcer. Before opting for prescription medication, I opted for Milk of Magnesia and not knowing what to dose him with, gave him 4 60-oz dose syringes.(240 cc). After this and testing the poop again, there was a whole lot of sand in the bag. I will continue with the Milk of Magnesia until the sand is cleared. I hope you will find this helpful.
I was very excited to discover that I could buy MoM by the gallon. Thank you allivet! Now we always have a supply on hand to sooth any discomfort our horses might experience when they're experiencing about of colic. At the first signs of colic, I normally mix a MoM with approximately a cup of baking soda and make it into a paste/liquid suitable for squirting with a dose syringe. It works wonders for our horses.
