Otibiotic Ointment (also known as gentamicin-betamethasone-clotrimazole ointment) is intended to be used to treat chronic or acute otitis externa in canines. This is typically associated with yeast (formerly known as Pityrosporum canis, now known as Malassezia pachydermatis) as well as any bacterium with susceptibility to gentamicin.

Otibiotic Ointment is indicated for the treatment of canine acute and chronic otitis externa associated with yeast and/or bacteria susceptible to gentamicin.

Otibiotic Ointment (also known as Gentamicin sulfate) is used for dogs in the treatment of bacterial or yeast ear infections.
What does Otibiotic Ointment do?
This medication, Otibiotic Ointment or Gentamicin sulfate, is what’s known as an aminoglycoside antibiotic. It is intended for the treatment of bacterium that is gram-positive or gram-negative. The analog of prednisolone, also known as Betamethasone, has slight mineral corticosteroid activity and significant corticosteroid activity.
The 17-valerate ester of betamethasone, known as Betamethasone valerate, has notable anti-pruritic and anti-inflammatory properties, making it ideal to treat corticosteroid-responsive otitis externa. It is applied topically to manage Clotrimazole.
Clotrimazole is antifungal and is broad-spectrum; it is intended for use in treating infections of the dermis. These infections are typically caused by a range of yeasts and pathogenic dermatophytes. Clotrimazole works primarily by preventing organisms from growing and dividing.

Gentamicin or Otibiotic Ointment is what’s known as an aminoglycoside. Side effects are associated with the poor absorption of aminoglycosides in the skin. This may lead to intoxication from the prolonged topical application to a large burn or wound on the skin for an extended period of time.
This is especially true in cases of insufficient renal function. Any aminoglycoside could cause both irreversible and sometimes reversible issues like cochlear, vestibular or renal toxicity.

What to know before using Otibiotic Ointment
- Keep this and all medication out of children’s reach.
- In some isolated cases, primarily geriatric dogs, Otibiotic Ointment (gentamicin-betamethasone-clotrimazole ointment) can lead to partial loss of hearing or deafness. This loss of hearing is typically only temporary in nature.
- If this symptom associated with hearing is observed during treatment, immediately stop administering the medication and flush the ear with a solution that is non-ototoxic. The administration of corticosteroids in rodents, rabbits, and dogs during gestation lead to offspring with cleft palates. Other observed anomalies in animals administered corticosteroids during pregnancy include:
- Phocomelia
- Deformed forelegs
- Anasarca

Overview
The external ear should be thoroughly cleaned and dried before treatment. Remove foreign material, debris, crusted exudates, etc., with suitable non-irritating solutions. Excessive hair should be clipped from the treatment area. After verifying that the eardrum is intact, instill 4 drops (2 drops from the 215 g bottle) of Otibiotic Ointment (gentamicin-betamethasone-clotrimazole ointment) twice daily into the ear canal of dogs weighing less than 30 lbs. Instill 8 drops (4 drops from the 215 g bottle) twice daily into the ear canal of dogs weighing 30 lbs or more. Therapy should continue for 7 consecutive days.
