How is Staphage Lysate (SPL) 10 mL sold?

Staphage Lysate for sale as 10 ml multidose rubber stoppered vials and in packages of ten 1 ml break-apart glass ampules. There is no difference in the contents. SPL contains no preservatives. Therefore, sterile technique must be used.

What are the side effects of Staphage Lysate (SPL) 10 mL?

  • Typical vaccine reactions of chills, fever, and/or malaise may occur. If these reactions are excessive, they may be lessened with a reduction in dosage.
  • Injection site reactions like swelling, itching, and/or redness could occur within 2 to 3 hours, and could last as long as 3 days, decreasing gradually. If excessive, these effects may be lessened with a reduction in dosage.

What special precautions are there?

  • Use a separate, sterile syringe and needle for each individual. Exercise aseptic technique in removing doses from ampoules or vials.
  • Exercise caution when administering to highly allergic patients, or patients with predisposition to allergic reactions.
  • Epinephrine and atropine are antidotes for potential allergic reactions.

What to do if overdose?

Contact your closest pet hospital.

Dosage Schedule I : Bi-Weekly
Non-allergic Patients
(As used in our clinical study)
Skin Test: Not required for non-allergic patients
All injections given subcutaneously
0.5 mL twice (2) weekly for 16 weeks
 
Dosage Schedule II : Weekly Protocol
Allergic Patients
(As used by many veterinarians)
Skin Test: 0.05 to 0.1 mL intradermally
All injections given subcutaneously
Week 1: 0.2 mL
Week 2: 0.4 mL
Week 3: 0.6 mL
Week 4: 0.8 mL
Week 5: 1.0 mL
Weeks 6 to 12: 1.0 mL (per week)
 
After either protocol, it is frequently necessary to give the dog monthly booster shots of 1.0 mL to prevent recurrence.
