Famciclovir is an antiviral medication prescribed by veterinarians to treat symptoms in cats with feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR) and feline herpes virus (FHV). These upper respiratory illnesses are infections associated with infection with feline herpesvirus.

Famciclovir works to treat symptoms of cats with feline viral rhinotracheitis and feline herpes virus.
This prescription-only antiviral medication is a nucleoside analog DNA polymerase inhibitor. This drug works to prevent DNA reproduction of viruses, diminishing the ability of such viruses to spread throughout your cat's body.
Famciclovir is considered effective and safe for cats, but it is a strong drug and can cause adverse reactions in some cats. These include:
Hypersensitivity could also occur. If your cat seems to be having any side effects from use of this medication, withdraw use and consult your veterinarian.
- Low-grade fever
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Nausea
