Ondansetron, also known as Zofran is intended in the treatment of various conditions, including vomiting. Made for cat and dog use, it can be specifically helpful for animals suffering from vomiting due to chemotherapy treatment. It’s also a treatment option for pruritus (itching) and sleep apnea in some cases.

It comes in a 40mg/20ml (2mg/ml), 20 ml injectable vial that is multidose.

Ondansetron is used in dogs and cats to treat a variety of conditions with the most common being vomiting, particularly chemotherapy associated-vomiting. It can also be used to treat sleep-apnea and pruritus (itching) in some pets.
Ondansetron is intended as a drug for humans, but can be used in cats and dogs when prescribed by a veterinarian for off label use.
Ondansetron:
  • Helps with vomiting, including that caused by chemotherapy treatment
  • Can help with sleep apnea

Ondansetron works through the inhibition of the 5HT3 serotonin receptors. These particular receptors are part of vagal nerve terminals and enteric neurons located in the GI tract. They are also located in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the brain.
While veterinary medicine doesn't typically use this medication, it can prove to be tolerated well. Possible side effects include:
  • Sedation
  • Constipation
  • Arrhythmias
  • Hypotension
  • Head shaking (extrapyramidal clinical signs)
