What makes Simparica different from Comfortis?

While both of these oral flea and tick treatment options are safe for use in dogs, only Comfortis may be administered to cats. Simparica, featuring Saroloner as its active ingredient, features an appealing liver flavor. Comfortis, which contains Spinosad, is a beef-flavored tablet. Comfortis works to kill fleas, while Simparica eradicates both fleas and ticks.

Comfortis begins working in 30 minutes, and Simparica works within 3 hours to kill fleas and 8 hours to kill ticks. Neither option is approved for use in lactating, pregnant, or breeding dogs, so you’ll need to consult your veterinarian to choose a treatment for your dog in those cases.

Comfortis is safe for use in cats or dogs beginning at an age of 14 weeks. Simparica is approved for use in dogs at least 6 months old. Each treatment is administered once monthly, and both require a prescription from your veterinarian.

How do I choose between Simparica and Comfortis?

In some cases, your pet’s needs might make the decision for you. For example, if you have a cat requiring flea treatment and you’re choosing between these two medications, Comfortis is the way to go. If your dog needs tick treatment, you’ll want to opt for Simparica.

If your pet is between the ages of 14 weeks and 6 months, Comfortis is the safe option. If you have a dog over the age of 6 months, you can choose between these two impressively effective treatments. Both of these medications are great ways to protect your pet against harmful parasites.

Ask your veterinarian any questions you have about these and any other flea and/or tick treatment medication. They’ll be able to help you choose the right option to meet your pet’s individual needs. If you have additional questions, give the Allivet pharmacists a call! They are available to consult pet parents on these and any other medications your pet might need.
