Can’t Have A Pet?

Maybe your building won’t allow it, or you’re on a very tight budget, or you’re just not ready for a pet. After all, adopting a pet is a lifetime commitment: you become your pet’s parent for the rest of their lifetime. This can mean around 15 years for cats, and 13 years for dogs, though your mileage may vary depending on breed, health conditions, and other factors.

If you’re not ready to commit to a pet just yet, here are three pawesome ways to enjoy fulfilling relationships with animals:

  1. Volunteer at a local shelter: Help out the pets who need it most. Volunteering at a local shelter is the best way to make a difference in your community and the lives of many animals in need. You can have an impact by bringing them love, attention, teaching them tricks and helping them find a furever home. Plus, you’ll make lots of friends, and not just the furry kind! Volunteering at a shelter will help you meet people like you who love animals and care about their well-being. Volunteering at a shelter is also a wonderful way to prepare you to be the best pet parent you can be in the future. You will interact with different animals (all with different personalities!) and learn the best way to take care of them.
  2. Become a pet sitter: Head over to the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters and find out about becoming one yourself. If you love spending time with pets, are knowledgeable, trustworthy, and experienced, you would make a great pet sitter! You can help to give people peace of mind while traveling, knowing that their pets are in good hands. Plus, you can make money by doing what you love the most: hanging out with animals. Imagine getting paid for walking a cute pup or playing with kitties. If this sounds like your dream job, check it out!
  3. Attract birds to your garden: Can you imagine a garden filled with beautiful birds flying around and singing in the morning? What a beautiful sight to wake up to! To attract birds to your garden, make your garden a safe haven for birds by providing everything they need: food, water, and shelter. Research the birds in your area to see what they need and how to attract them. You might find that you attract different types of birds depending on the season. Remember to avoid pesticides and keep predators (such as cats) at bay!
