National Pet Dental Health Month

So, you leaned in for a kiss and instead you were blown away with an overwhelming odor?

Did you know that unpleasant odor might signify a serious health risk that could potentially damage your pet’s teeth and gums or even worse, your pet’s internal organs as well?

Why dedicate a whole month towards pet dental care?

According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, oral disease is the number one health issue affecting 80% of dogs and 70% of cats by age three. Not too surprising considering that most people don’t brush their pet’s teeth. So why should you care? Poor oral hygiene doesn’t just cause bad breath; it can lead to tooth loss, painful abscesses, difficulty eating, and other serious health problems for your pet.

Brush up on Your Pets Oral Care

Most pet owners don’t choose to neglect their pet’s teeth. Sometimes, they just don’t know any better. With that, we are on a mission to inform you and hope that you too will spread the word.  Home dental care is as important for your pets as it is for you.  Getting familiar with a preventive oral routine and regular professional care can prevent problems that occur as a result of tartar and plaque buildup. Avoiding these problems, starts with a solid dental routine.

The Path to Healthy Smiles

A dental care option exists for all pets, regardless of size, age, temperament or time constraints of busy owners.  Visit your veterinarian and ask which at home dental care products are best for your pet.  Begin where you and your pet are most comfortable or use all three methods of at home dental care.

3 Easy Rules to Remember

  1. Good to Chew
  2. Better to Rinse
  3. Best to Brush

Good to Chew:

Giving your pet a dental chew is certainly easier than getting his teethed brushed. Though not as effective as brushing his teeth, it is still a great start to better dental health.  Some chews like Greenies dental treats are great for both feline and canine dental care.  Dental Chews feature a special texture designed for maximum dental effectiveness. These unique treats help control plaque and tartar buildup by mechanical abrasion.  C.E.T. VeggieDent Tartar Control Chews for Dogs is a Vegetable-based chew that works with a dog’s chewing action to freshen breath, reduce plaque, and decrease tartar formation.

Your pet should spend about 30 minutes gnawing, daily, for maximum tooth-scraping benefit. Supervise your pet with any prolonged treat, and take it away if it becomes small enough to pose a choking hazard.

Better to Rinse:

Pet dental rinses aid in the preventions of plaque on your pets teeth and helps keep your pet’s teeth clean and their breath fresh.  CET Oral Hygiene combines 0.12% Chlorhexidine and Zinc Gluconate in a plaque-fighting formulation that may be used with or without brushing.  The easy to use, CET AquaDent Dental additive, freshens your dogs and cats breath and helps prevent plaque accumulation when added to pet’s drinking water daily.

Best to Brush:

It is ideal to brush your dog’s teeth daily, just like you brush your own. However, if your schedule doesn’t allow that, aim to brush your dog’s teeth at least several times a week and include chews and a dental rinse in your routine.  Pet toothpaste like CET Enzymatic Toothpaste is often flavored like poultry, malt and other pet-friendly varieties is your best option. Never use human toothpaste, baking soda or salt. While safe for pet owners themselves, these cleaning agents can be harmful to your cat or dog if swallowed.   The C.E.T. oral Hygiene Kit for cats or dogs is sold with a tooth brush or finger brush small enough to reach all of your pets teeth.

If your pet won’t allow you to brush their teeth you may want to consider a dental wipe like D.D.S. Dental Wipes or DentAcetic Dental wipes.  OraVet is the first plaque prevention system that significantly reduces plaque and tartar formation by creating an invisible barrier that prevents bacteria from attaching to your pet’s teeth.
