New Product Spotlight: SILEO – an effective and sound way to help dogs suffering from noise aversion

Most dogs are easily startled by loud noises: fireworks, thunder storms, trucks backfiring, construction work, and trains passing by. In time, they adapt to the noises and eventually are not bothered by it. However, some dogs suffer from noise aversion. Dogs that don’t lose their fear of loud noises will exhibit their distress in many strange and unusual ways: violent shaking or clinging to its owner, running off in a panic, destructive chewing, urinating or defecating indoors, some dogs have been known to jump through plate glass windows.

Traditionally, noise aversion in dogs has been addressed by changing the dog’s environment, having them wear a pressure shirt, behavior modification, placing the dog in a room or in a portable kennel, pet calming medications, and using pheromone treatments. These treatment forms have yielded positive results in addressing noise aversion in dogs. Now there’s one more!

SILEO which is “the first and only medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of noise aversion in dogs,”* according to Zoetis the manufacturer of SILEO.

SILEO’s active ingredient is dexmedetomidine which is known to act as a blocker against norepinephrine (the chemical in the brain that is associated with producing fear and anxiety). Unlike other pet calming medications, SILEO calms dogs down while not sedating them. Thereby, allowing your dog to participate in events such as the Fourth of July.

SILEO comes as an oral gel. It is applied between the dog’s cheek and gum where it is absorbed by the mucous membranes in the mouth. SILEO comes in an easy-to-use syringe which is graduated to facilitate dosing. Your dog’s weight will determine the dosage.

SILEO starts to work within 30- to 60-minutes of administering. You can give your dog SILEO as soon as it starts to show signs of distress, or you can administer the medication prior to an event where there will be a lot of loud noises. Each dose can last anywhere from two to three hours.

Possible side effects of SILEO are vomiting, sleepiness, or a sedated state. A prescription from a veterinarian is required to obtain SILEO.
