How do Interceptor and Simparica Trio differ?

These two top-of-the-line medications are similar in many ways. They are both chewable, once-monthly, prescription-only, beef-flavored tablets. They both protect against heartworm disease, and they both protect against hookworms and roundworms. Both products are safe for use in puppies - Interceptor can be administered to puppies at least 4 weeks old weighing a minimum of 2 pounds, and Simparica Trio is safe for puppies at least 8 weeks old weighing a minimum of 2.8 pounds.

Each of these products offer a number of unique advantages to set them apart from one another.

Interceptor contains the active ingredient Milbemycin Oxime. This ingredient is safe for use in cats, as well as lactating, breeding, and pregnant pets. It offers added protection against whipworms.

Simparica Trio combines three active ingredients - Saroloner, Moxidectin, and Pyrantel. These ingredients team up to provide added protection against flea larvae, flea eggs, fleas, and ticks. This product has not been proven safe for use in pregnant, lactating, or breeding pets, and it should not be administered to cats.

How do I choose between Interceptor and Simparica Trio?

To choose between these two products, you’ll want to consider a few different factors.

  • Do you intend to treat a puppy between 4 and 8 weeks old, a cat, or a breeding, pregnant, or lactating pet? If so, Interceptor is the safest choice.
  • Do you wish to protect your pet against whipworms, or would your pet benefit more from flea and tick protection? If whipworms are most concerning to you, or if your pet is already taking a flea and tick preventative, Interceptor might be the best option. (Be sure to speak to your veterinarian before combining medications.) If your dog is not currently taking a flea and tick preventative, Simparica Trio is a great, broad-spectrum choice.

Once you’ve narrowed your search, it’s time to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. Be sure to ask your vet whether or not the option you’ve chosen is best for your pet, and come to the appointment armed with your questions and concerns. If you think of a question after your appointment, that’s what the Allivet pharmacists are here for!
