The Companion Animal Parasite Control Council (CAPC), an independent council of animal health professionals and parasitologists, has said that the incidences of heartworms and the spread of Lyme disease will be higher than average in 2022.
The changes, which CAPC say are a result of climate change, will also see fleas and ticks spreading into geographic areas that typically have a low occurrence – and those parasites will carry diseases, including heartworm and Lyme disease, with them.
Pet owners are encouraged to be vigilant about administering parasite control, including both flea and tick prevention. Following guidelines without missing a dose will provide the most effective protection.
