Trifexis vs Advantage II

Making decisions that meet all your pet’s needs can be tricky. At Allivet, we’re here to make those decisions just a little easier. Two of the top parasite treatment options are Trifexis Chewable Tablets and Advantage II. Each of these options handle parasite infestations in different ways. The table and extra information below will give you the necessary tools to make an informed decision on which product to choose for your pet!

What are the differences between Trifexis and Advantage II

For starters, Trifexis is a chewable tablet whereas Advantage II is a topical spot-on treatment. Trifexis can be given to puppies 8 weeks and older, weighing 5 pounds or more. Advantage II is safe for puppies as early as 7 weeks.

Trifexis contains Spinosad and Milbemycin Oxime, and it begins to kill fleas in as little as 30 minutes. It eliminates all fleas within 4 hours. Trifexis also eliminates internal parasitic infestations such as roundworm, hookworm, and whipworm. Finally, it prevents heartworm. Advantage uses Imidacloprid and Pyriproxyfen and starts to kill fleas in 12 hours. It also eliminates flea eggs, flea larvae, and lice.

Speak to your vet about the risks of using Advantage and Trifexis on breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs. Trifexis is not available for cats. However, Advantage II is available as a topical treatment for your feline companion.

Unlike Advantage II, Trifexis is available only with a prescription. Your vet should be able to answer any questions related to side effects, precautions, or special care for your dog.

Final Thoughts on Trifexis vs Advantage II

Overall, the costs for Trifexis and Advantage II are consistent with prescription vs. over-the-counter products. Some pet owners may start with Advantage II until they're able to get a prescription from their vet. Pet parents may also opt to switch over to an alternative product to protect breeding, pregnant, and lactating dogs.
