Dogs can be prone to certain anxieties and fears just like humans. Loud noises, being home alone, meeting new humans or other pets, and/or travelling can cause even the best-behaved dog to bark incessantly, lose its continence, or even destroy furniture. What’s a dog owner to do?
Behavior modification has been known to effectively help a dog overcome its fear. If you want to attempt to change your pet’s reactions to stress, there are plenty of instructional books and videos on the market. Or you can take your pooch to a dog trainer who will address the behavior you wish to change.
Either method is effective in helping your dog conquer its fears and anxieties. However, in some cases anxiety medications for dogs and/or dog calming supplements can help aid the behavior modification training.

Prescription Anxiety Medications for Dogs

Buspirone (Buspar brand) is used to treat anxiety disorders or in the short-term treatment of symptoms of anxiety. Buspirone is sometimes prescribed for other uses. Buspirone has been especially helpful in the treatment of phobias (such as fear of thunder, people in uniform, etc.) and in the treatment of urine marking in cats.
Fluoxetine is an antidepressant used by Vets for the treatment of separation anxiety in conjunction with a behavior modification plan.
Sileo (Dexmedetomidine Oromucosal Gel) is the first and only FDA-approved prescription medication for the treatment of canine noise aversion. It is a synthetic alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist. Each ml of SILEO contains 0.09 mg dexmedetomidine (equivalent to 0.1 mg dexmedetomidine hydrochloride). Because Sileo is formulated to provide a low dose of dexmedetomidine, the dog remains calm, yet fully functional, and is able to interact normally.
Clomicalm tablets help relieve the suffering of separation anxiety in dogs and works as Step 2 in training your dog, by making it easier for your dog to learn new/positive behaviors. Clomicalm are non-sedating and come in a tasty beef flavoring.
Mirtazapine (Brand Remeron) is primarily used to treat the symptoms of moderate to severe depression. Veterinary use Anecdotal evidence also suggests that mirtazapine may be effective in treating certain vomiting or anorexia-related conditions in dogs and cats.
