Kidney Disease in Dogs and Cats

Kidney disease is common in dogs in cats, and the risk increases as pets age. Kidney disease affects both dogs and cats, but it is more common in cats, afflicting about 80% of senior cats.

In some cases, kidney disease has been present for years—diagnosed or undiagnosed—so pinpointing the underlying cause can be difficult. Other times, the onset is sudden and may be linked to ingesting toxins, such as grapes, raisins, vitamin D, or lilies. Older pets are more likely to be affected, but dogs and cats of any age can suffer from renal disease.

Does Kidney Disease Always Lead to Kidney Failure?

Managing kidney disease is possible, but whether or not it will eventually cause total kidney failure depends on factors such as what caused the issue, the age of the pet, and the stage of the disease. Since there are not usually early warning signs, kidney disease may progress for years before being diagnosed.

That fact highlights the importance of yearly screenings, and the annual checkups become even more critical as pets age. Talk to your vet about when your pet should begin having kidney screenings, which may include blood tests and urinalysis.

The earlier kidney issues are detected, the better the chance to manage them effectively.

Signs of Kidney Disease

As mentioned above, kidney disease has usually progressed by the time noticeable symptoms occur. Still, it’s useful to take note of these potential signs, so that you can talk to your vet at the first indication of a problem.

Symptoms include:

  • Excessive drinking
  • Producing more urine than normal
  • Blood in urine or stools
  • General lethargy
  • Pale gums
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Decreased appetite
  • Confusion or stumbling
  • Vomiting
